Sam Ogilvie

"The happiest people don’t have the best of everything, they make the best of everything."

Sam grew up in the North of Scotland. He travelled extensively with his parents in the US but finally settled in London where he trained at Middlesex School of Art and then Kingston University in Furniture Design and Applied Arts.
After finishing his training he began designing bespoke sculptural furniture and had his first show at The Northcote Gallery aged 22.
In 1994 he found his way into commercial interior design when he was asked to create an interior for a London nightclub, Embargo, as well as designing the furniture. From there the commissions multiplied to include many well known bars, clubs, restaurants and shops in and around London. Including The Astral, Aldo Zilli’s Restaurants, 6 Degrees, The Leopard Lounge, The International, Sejour, Barra, Cafe De Paris, Dirty Martini Bars and The Golden Bee in Shoreditch. Sam was asked to design a new building for his local community shop project. The shop has won various Design and Project Awards.
Alongside these interior projects, he still found time for his first love, creating unique pieces of furniture and sculpture, collaborating with artists and architects. He often assisted his father, the artist Gerald Laing, on projects such as the Lineout Sculpture at Twickenham (2010).
Sam’s Bumbo Lamps were sold exclusively through Paul Smith Interiors and his Sculpted aluminium bar can be seen at Pandora’s flagship store on Oxford St, London.
Sam designed and made the interiors of The Hampstead Butcher and Providore in Hampstead, West Hampstead and Muswell Hill (https://hampsteadbutcher.com/) and Tannin & Oak in West Hampstead (http://www.tanninandoak.com/) Sam designed and made furniture for Guido’s Italian in Liphook (http://www.guidos.co.uk/), which is already winning awards.

Sam has been designing and building Houseboats. Initially for himself but also as a new string to his design bow. His latest houseboat build for LAB Architects (http://samogilvie.co.uk/design/london_houseboat)
Most recently Sam has been building a garden pavilion for renowned garden designer Ann-Marie Powell for Chelsea Flower Show 2024. Check out his Instagram for images of the project so far.
